Over time, these batteries are susceptible to a "memory effect", which can reduce their battery capacity. The memory effect can be cured by fully discharging the battery before recharging it. DeepDischarge provides a safe, fast and automatic way to deep discharge your PowerBook's battery. DeepDischarge automatically bypasses the low battery warning dialogs, and prevents the "soft" sleep brought on by those dialogs. Instead, DeepDischarge will run your PowerBook's battery down until the "hard" hardware shutdown occurs, which is at a lower voltage. This provides the best discharge possible. Using DropQ is quite easy. When you drag and drop a file (or files) into DropQ, it automatically launch the application you selected beforehand, tells the application to open the file you droped, tells QuicKeys to execute the sequence you selected beforehand, and after all files are processed, the application and DropQ quits. You can drag and drop more than one file at one time. All files are opend and processed one after another. This is the most useful part of DropQ. Perhaps it could be inserted it in your archive in the directory /info-mac/snd/util. For lack of fantasy I called it "Mini Recorder 2.1". I hope this name is not in use for some commercial or shareware software: in such a case let me know and I will change it. The program itself is 110k plus a demo "Tape" of about 400k; after compression it takes 264k and after BinHex 356k. If you prefer to save some space you can keep just the program and discard the demo Tape. I leave a copy af the same distribution at ftp.dm.unipi.it in /pub/mac-steffe. To run this program you will need a Mac with System 7, a fast clock and at least 68020 + arithmetic coprocessor 68881 and 6Mb of RAM. I use it on my Powerbook170 with 8Mb of RAM. Essentially with this program you can record, play, edit by cutting and pasting, dub and mix sounds sampled at 8 bit and 22Khz. Up to 8 "Tracks" can be opened at the same time. Up to 4 "Tracks" can be played together. No length limit for Tracks. "Tapes" are files that can group up to 4 Tracks, in a particular AIFF format. Moreover, there is a Fourier Power Spectrum, some digital filters, and ability to convert some sound resources. Please, read the online help before using the program. Anyway, to use it, briefly: first load a "Tape" ; than select a "Track" and read the Tape sound in the Track; than edit and/or play and mix. If you have no Tapes ready, record some sound in a 1-Track-Tape and go on. It is not difficult to record some person speaking and reassemble his words getting a different speech. Warnings: 1. despite the 2.1 this is a first release: there will be bugs ! write to me the bug you find and I will try to fix it this summer in version 2.2. 2. unlimited Track length means you can not save the Track if you have not enough disk space. 3. do not keep open other applications when using Mini Recorder 2.1 : if it happens to crash your system you will not loose documents opened by other applications. 4. use earphones when dubbing ! 5. PPC is the service used to implement program linking and remote AppleEvents. PPC is implemented on top of ADSP, so you may wonder why a PPC tool would be useful since Apple already distributes an ADSP tool. PPC is more efficient when connecting two ports on the same computer, and more specific in the way remote ports are selected. It is also possible to create a port that is not visible across the network, which makes the port initialization much faster and could provide better security for certain applications. While ADSP may also have these features, they are not accessible to the user in Apple's tool as far as I can determine. You may be freely copy and use this tool for personal, non-commercial activities. For all other uses, contact Outland. Well, man, oh, man, I had this problem last year, and here's what caused it: If you use the fabulous Now Utilities, you are in possession of a feature that may have gone unnoticed unless you actually read the manual. If you click on any item in a menu and hold it (not releasing the mouse button), and press a key, such as control-Z or, what has happened here, Command-Q, that key will invoke the menu item forevermore. Definitely yes, since the DOS format requires that a Mac has (a) a FDHD floppy drive, which is also sometimes called "SuperDrive", (b) some software to read data in from a DOS disk, such as AccesPC, PC Exchange, DosMounter, etc. It is NOT a problem of system 6 or system 7, but you won't be able to read those disks on a Mac with only the 800k drive. There is an EXTERNAL solution for the MacPlus which I know that it works: Kennect Technologies had a "Drive 2.4 & Rapport" hardware/software solution which attached to the Plus' disk drive port. But it seems that Kennect does no longer exists, and I have given away my equipment together with the Plus I owned, so that I cannot look it up for you. The folder where the fonts are stored in Sys 7.1 can handle a certain number of items only - don't remember how many, but I believe it was 127 or 255. Some of my colleagues think that Suitcase (from Fifth Generation Software, now owned by Symantec) is the best font management utility - but I don't use it, so I can't comment. > also, if I am looking to increase printing speed, what factors must I > consider? I'm no network expert - but if you use many fonts which are not printer-resident, you spend lot of time for downloading them to your laser printer. Attach a harddisk to your laser printer and the fonts will not need to travel over the net which saves time. If you always use the same (non-resident) fonts, download them manually when you switch on the printer (this anticipates that your printer has enough RAM to do this) and they will remain in memory until you reset the printer or the memory is needed for some other operation. ARA vs. Timbuktu Pro? I'd like some input to some questions I have about setting up remote dial-in: One main topic I'd like to find out about is a comparison of Timbuktu Pro and Apple Remote Access to provide remote access. Is there any need to have ARA if I can make a TCP/IP connection to my desktop Mac with Timbuktu Pro? Are there any features that ARA provides that Timbuktu Pro does not? Here's the scenario: Instead of buying a modem for my office computer and using ARA, I'd like to dial in to a central modem pool using SLIP and connect to the campus internet and make a TCP/IP connection to my office Mac using Timbuktu Pro. That way I'd have a "virtual screen" of my desktop Mac on my PB screen, and be able to manipulate files/processes as if I were at my desk. To make this work, I think I need to register the machine IP address that I wish to connect to with the campus Domain Name Server. Can anyone verify this? A modem capable of 14,400 baud should transmit a 1 MB file in >1,048,576 / 1,440 = 728.2 seconds (12 minutes). And Jeffrey N. Fritz (JFRITZ%WVNVM.BITNET@Forsythe.Stanford.EDU) writes: >There are eight bits in a byte. So a 100,000 byte file has 800,000 bits. >At 2400 bps, the file would take: > > (100,000*8)/2400 = 333.33 seconds or 5.5 minutes. They can't both be right! Actually, at these speeds the term 'baud' is incorrect and doesn't relate to the throughput of the modem. (It defines the speed of a serial connection as the number of transitions between logic '1' and logic '0'). It is more correct to talk of bits-per-second (bps). A V32.bis modem will throughput 14,400 bps 'in the raw', i.e. the hardware transmits data at that speed down the phone line. There are various compression schemes to increase this speed, Anders is correct when he says that a text file *can* be compressed by the modems to achieve an overall apparent speed of 57,600 bps. *Remember, though, that if the file you're transferring is already compressed with Stuffit or Compact Pro or the like, the modems' compression will not increase the throughput, and may, indeed, slow it down! So, and this is where we have to rap Jeffery's knuckles, there are (usually) TEN bits per byte when we are talking of modem communications, with Macs and other personal computers, - the eight data bits, one parity bit, and one stop bit. So the calculation is easy, as Anders wrote in his reply. Simply divide the modem speed (14,400bps) by ten and you have the throughput in characters-per-second (1440cps). A typical connection with a 14,400 modem will achieve something like 1480cps on a good line and a compressed file, but remember that system load (at either end or on the gateways between) will really determine the throughput. I find that a rough speed calculation is 4Mb per hour, or 1Mb in 15 minutes, based on my own experience. Colons can't appear in file names because the file system uses them as delimeters. There are a few places where they forgot to trap the colon character. For example, when you record a new sound with the sound cdev, the name you give it may contain colons. Try dragging that sound out of the System Suitcase, though, and you'll get a badly phrased error message. brian ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Feb 94 09:21:38 GMT From: "D.Bell" Subject: Four Key Box Can anyone tell me where I can buy or, alternatively, whether it is easy to make, a four key box. I had problems with a 14.4 modem I purchased last summer. _Weird_ problems, since the modem worked perfectly and consistently from some telephone jacks but never from others. When I discussed this with the techie and told him that the modem in another PB worked just fine from these same jacks, he agreed that it might be a hardware problem. I was still under warranty, but was dismayed at the idea of a four-day turnaround time for swapping the old modem for its replacement. So I made a special plea for APS to send me the new one _before_ receiving the old one, and they agreed! Not only that, but they covered the expense of Fedex shipment in both directions. Amazing. I have purchased several things from APS in the past, but wouldn't call myself a BIG customer. But loyal. Some of my buddies on CIS' MAUG forums have had similarly good experiences with exceptional service. And very nice and knowledgeable tech support, as someone pointed out earlier right here. Don't do anything special at all. For example, to move a Mac Word file over to Win-doze, put the file on a DOS floppy disk (using Apple File Exchange for example) and then open the file in Win Word. Win Word converts the file as it opens. Similarly, you can take a DOS floppy disk containing Win Word files over to your Mac, transfer the files to the hard disk, launch Word, and do File/Open to open and convert the documents. In either case, you should get a good (often excellent) conversion. Two things, though, to keep in mind: - If you are converting graphics, expect more of a good then an excellent conversion AND do all the converting on the Mac. That is, do save the files out as Win Word from Mac Word. - If your fonts are convering willy-nilly, consider setting up a font mapping file. You can find directions in the Conversion Information document that got installed with the various bits and pieces of Word. Look in the folder that also holds the Word Commands folder. On a related topic, if you are convering from WinWord 6 to Mac Word 5.x, you must do the converting completely in WinWord 6; though Microsoft plans to release a converter that you can use with Word 5, the converter is not yet available. Oh, and finally, RTF is often a good fallback if you don't know what to do and you are converting between MS wordprocessor-like programs. cheers, tonya >From: Dwight Lemke at Wisconsin Oshkosh >Subject: WinWord <-> Mac Word > >What's the recommended way to transfer files back and forth between Word >for Windows (2.0, I believe) and Word 5.1a? Sincerely, ABRODY@VAX.CLARKU.EDU ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Feb 94 18:03:05 EST From: Pete Tamas Subject: LPI/DPI and color separations You must remember than DPI refers to the resolution of the output device (printer). LPI refers to the size of the halftone dot. The printer dots make up a collection (matrix) of dots that make the halftone dot. Thats why LPI is less than DPI. The interesting thing is that the big problem in outputting first-rate color separations is related to this issue. In order to do color on a press, the 4 colors are output at different angles. If the angles are inprecise, the output will look terrible. In order to output at these angles, the halftone dot (measured in LPI) must be rotated. Because a matrix is rotated on a matrix, the dots will not overlap correctly. Therefore, the exact angles the printers want can not be output unless you have 3000+ DPI and even that is not exact enough for some things. The limitation is on the power of the imagesetter. THE FUTURE. Once the imagesetters get more powerfull, perhaps the PPC microprocessor will do the trick, more dots can be drawn so that the halftone dots can be drawn at the appropriate angles. So, if someone says the "desktop" (i.e., a Mac) can't do high-end color separations and for that you need a Scitex, feel free to correct them and point out that the output device is at fault. If Scitex equipment will easily accept Mac files, Macs will be able to do high end separations. Scitex is not too motivated to do so because no one would use their "front-end" equipment if they could output to a Scitex from a Mac. (Scitex is talking about doing this, though). In short, I don't know what the LPI of the laser printer in question is. However, to get the answer, use Adobe Separator and use the PPD >From that printer. It will list all the available LPI screen resolutions in a pop-up menu.-Pete Tamas ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Feb 1994 10:21:10 -0500 From: "Tom Scott" Subject: LW Select 360 Specs-Found! I have a Mac LC III and use 'Remote Access' to connect to a server via modem. A dialogue box comes up saying something to the effect of 'Unable to connect. Unidentified error of type -5541(?) has occurred.' Thinking that the only thing that had changed was addition of MS-Mail 3.1 I removed mail and tried again with the same result. I think the problem may be a bug in Remote Access because the modem doesn't even begin doing anything before the error appears. When you install "composite" memory SIMMs in these Macs, you get all sorts of problems. One of the symptoms I had was a complete inability to format 800K floppies, even tho I could format HD floppies just fine. When I switched to non-composite memory the problems went away. How to tell: look at the SIMMs you installed; count the number of chips on the SIMM; if it is 32 chips for a 16MB SIMM, that is composite; if it is 8 chips, that is non-composite.
